Thrifting, Mocktails, and Summer Vibes at the Jersey Shore
I can feel it… summer at the Jersey Shore is officially creeping in. The pollen is attacking, my car has probably gone through its 100th wash already, and suddenly every errand feels like a race against beach season. But somewhere between vacuuming out the car and mentally planning my first full beach day, I stumbled into what might just be my new favorite South Jersey hidden gem.
If you love vintage finds, furniture treasures, and the thrill of uncovering something amazing, you need to check out The Red Door Thrift Store in Linwood NJ, part of the Cancer Support Community (formerly Gilda’s Club).
The Best Thrift Store Find Yet
The moment I walked into The Red Door Thrift Store, I knew I was in trouble. Ihe good kind of trouble. Every corner was packed with beautiful furniture, vintage décor, old writing desks, dining room sets, and enough quirky knickknacks to keep me wandering for hours.
I wanted to buy half the store and photograph the other half.
Then I spotted the couch.
My mom has been searching forever for the perfect couch, and somehow this one practically screamed our name. Originally marked at $500, then slashed to $400, it had an extra 50% off sticker sitting right next to it. A three-piece set for $200? Absolutely not leaving without it.
The couch, footrest, and chair were definitely on the heavier side, but that didn’t stop us from happily paying and immediately calling Joe to bring the truck. Honestly, there’s nothing more satisfying than scoring an unbelievable thrift find that feels like it was meant for you.
Now I’m already planning my next visit because let’s be real, even if you don’t know what you need at a thrift store, somehow the thrift store always knows.
Big News: I’m Writing for Shore Local!
After hauling furniture around and sweating through my “casual shopping trip,” I worked up a serious appetite. We stopped at La Pizzatega for a snack, and here’s the exciting part, you’ll be able to read all about that experience in next week’s edition of Shore Local.
That’s right, I’m officially writing food reviews for Shore Local News Magazine!
I’m beyond excited for this new adventure, especially because it gives me even more excuses to explore amazing South Jersey restaurants, mocktails, and hidden gems with all of you.
Mocktails and Dinner at Ventura’s Offshore Café
Still craving something tropical after our snack stop, I realized it had been way too long since I visited Ventura's Offshore Cafe.
Located off Shore Road in Northfield, Ventura’s is much bigger than it looks from the outside. Between the large dining space, lively bar area, and attached liquor store entrance, the place always has an energetic hometown feel.
Since I was dining solo, I grabbed a seat at the bar, which means I immediately slipped into full people-watching mode. I always notice how bartenders interact with customers and each other, and the overall atmosphere felt upbeat and friendly. Some guests were locked into the golf game on TV while bartenders hustled around making drinks.
I did notice one major restaurant no-no: a bartender using a glass to scoop ice from the ice bin. Unfortunately, once you’ve worked in hospitality, there are just certain things you can’t unsee.
The Pineapple Mojito Mocktail
Despite my hesitation, I still ordered a mocktail, and I’m glad I did. (After inspecting the glass, of course…)
There wasn’t a dedicated mocktail menu, but the bartender was incredibly friendly and happy to create something custom. I told him to surprise me, and moments later he returned with a beautiful pineapple mojito mocktail.
It was tropical, minty, bubbly, refreshing, and dangerously easy to drink. The pineapple flavor really stood out while the mint kept everything crisp and balanced. It tasted exactly like the kind of drink you want while sitting outside on a hot summer day.
As we chatted, I asked whether Ventura’s had ever considered offering a full mocktail menu. He mentioned they do carry nonalcoholic spirits and had tried featuring a specialty mocktail before, but it apparently didn’t sell well.
Personally, I still think a dedicated mocktail menu would be a huge win. More people are looking for nonalcoholic options now than ever before, and it’s always nice knowing exactly what creative alcohol-free drinks are available. Maybe they’ll join the Hero Campaign's Mocktail Challenge this year! It’s never too late to become a hero <3
But maybe that’s just the Sober Party Girl in me talking.
The Food: Salmon Creole
I already knew Ventura’s had a strong seafood menu, but since it was Mother’s Day weekend, they were serving a special holiday menu instead of their regular offerings.
I ordered the salmon creole, and honestly, the kitchen wasted no time. Almost immediately after the bread hit the bar, my entrée arrived.
The salmon was cooked perfectly and served over basmati rice with asparagus and a cold corn relish on top. At first, the cold relish over hot fish threw me off a little, but after a few bites, it completely worked. The sweetness and crunch of the corn mixture balanced the rich salmon beautifully.
I probably could have licked the plate clean.
One thing to note: during dinner service, the bartenders don’t handle food tabs, so I had to pay separately for drinks and dinner. Not a huge deal, just something to know ahead of time if you sit at the bar.
Final Thoughts
Between incredible thrift store finds, exciting writing opportunities, tropical mocktails, and delicious seafood dinners, this week felt like the unofficial kickoff to summer in South Jersey.
Life has been chaotic lately with errands, projects, and trying to get everything done before full beach mode officially begins. Joe already bought sand-sifter shovels, which probably means we’ll spend most of the summer treasure hunting along the shoreline, and honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Have you found any amazing thrift store treasures lately? Or do you know a South Jersey restaurant with an incredible mocktail menu? I need recommendations, so drop them in the comments!
Until next time,
