April Showers, Mexican Madness & Mocktails: A South Jersey Foodie Recap

After weeks of newscasters warning about drought conditions and New Jersey hinting at water restrictions, the rain finally showed up right on cue. April showers are officially here… now if only they could revive the flowers I forgot to plant (and are currently fighting for their lives on my patio).

Mexican Madness in Atlantic City ๐ŸŒฎ

This week kicked off with one of the most delicious events of the season, Mexican Madness in Atlantic City. Local restaurants went head-to-head, serving up their best Mexican-inspired bites in hopes of claiming the top spot.

Now, after my fourth birria quesadilla (no regrets), I couldn’t tell you who officially won, but I can tell you who stole the show for me:

  • Kings Pub came in strong with a fresh tuna tostada that was unexpectedly incredible. Crunchy, salty, fresh; this one lived rent-free in my head for days.

  • JV’s in Pleasantville fueled my birria obsession. I devoured multiple in under two minutes (a personal record), and their staff was just as impressive: friendly, fun, and full of energy. Definitely on my must-visit list.

  • Chart House at the Golden Nugget served a shrimp taco that completely shocked me. Shrimp tacos seem simple… so why were these one of the best things I’ve ever eaten? I don’t have answers, I just need them on a Happy Hour menu ASAP.

Overall, the event was such a fun way to discover new spots and flavors. Came hungry, left confused about winners, but very, very happy.

Brunch Vibes at 279 Social ☕๐Ÿณ

A few days (and cravings) later, I decided to keep the food tour going. This time with brunch in Galloway at 279 Social Kitchen & Craft Bar.

You might remember them from our time with the Hero Campaign last summer (hello, iconic “no-hito”). Well, they’ve fully committed to the mocktail movement, and I am here for it. They even host events centered around crafted mocktails, which is something I cannot wait to experience.

Formerly Romanelli’s, 279 Social has been refreshed, renovated, and completely elevated. It’s not just a breakfast spot anymore, it’s a full-on vibe, blending brunch energy with a lively bar atmosphere.

Mocktails That Deserve Main Character Energy ๐Ÿน

Naturally, I went straight for the mocktail menu. There were five handcrafted options, and while I wanted them all, I showed restraint (growth) and chose three:

  • Hibiscus Kiss – A tropical hibiscus iced tea with pineapple and lime. Light, bubbly, and refreshing with a nostalgic, summery ice-pop vibe.

  • Cider Mos-No Mule – Apple cider, lime juice, and ginger beer. Spicy, bold, and definitely not playing around, this is a grown-up drink.

  • Pomegranate No-Hito – Bright pink and full of personality. Tart and refreshing with a minty finish that leaves your mouth feeling super clean.

Honestly, the mocktail program here deserves its own spotlight. If you have a flavor in mind, chances are they can make it.

The Food (Worth the Wait… Mostly) ๐Ÿฝ️

While halfway through my drinks, I realized our food hadn’t arrived yet. It did take a bit longer than expected, so bring someone you actually enjoy talking to.

When the food finally came… It was the wrong order. But to their credit, it was fixed quickly and without issue. Things happen.

  • A Build-Your-Own Omelet – Loaded with veggies, served with crispy potatoes and toast. A solid, hearty, no-surprises breakfast.

  • My Egg White Skillet – Egg whites over a hot skillet of veggies and potatoes, topped with feta and served with toast. It looked small but was surprisingly filling, and something different you don’t see everywhere.

The Atmosphere ✨

After eating, we took a quick walk around. The space feels familiar but upgraded, like your favorite place got a glow-up without losing its personality.

The bar was packed, and the $1 mimosa special was clearly the star of the show. Between that and the creative drink menu, it’s easy to see how this place transitions seamlessly from brunch to full-on party mode.

Final Thoughts

Another brunch win for the books. 279 Social stands out for its creativity, especially when it comes to mocktails, and its willingness to experiment with flavors and experiences.

With May officially here, the Jersey Shore is about to come alive again, and I’m ready for more moments, memories, and of course… more mocktails.

Cheers to more fun!

Until next time,
The Sober Party Girl ๐Ÿฅ‚✨
