Dooney’s Pub in Northfield, NJ: A Fresh New Chapter for a Local Favorite

After years of driving past the building while it sat empty, burned, and then slowly renovated, locals can finally raise a glass at Dooney’s Pub in Northfield, NJ.

For many of us, this spot will always be remembered as the former Tilton Inn. Toward the end of its run, the building felt more like a nostalgic memory than somewhere you actually wanted to spend a night out. But now, Dooney’s has completely revived the space, keeping some of that classic neighborhood charm while giving it a fresh new energy.

And honestly? Northfield needed it.

The Dooney’s Pub Story

While Dooney’s Pub may be new to Northfield, the team behind it is far from new to the restaurant scene. The original location opened in Delran, New Jersey in 2011, serving Irish-inspired comfort food alongside a lively bar atmosphere.

Bringing that same energy to this historic building feels like the perfect match. The space has been through a lot over the years, locals might even remember the occasional car bumping into the place, but it’s finally getting the glow-up it deserves.

First Impressions (And the Parking Situation)

We were excited to check it out, and apparently so was everyone else.

The parking lot fills up quickly, with people spilling into nearby spots just to get within walking distance. Luckily, the parking gods were smiling on me and I snagged a spot right by the door.

Once inside, things were buzzing. The bar was packed, so it took a moment to find the hostess stand since there are multiple entrances into the building. Once we were seated in one of the brand-new booths, menus quickly followed.

And let me tell you… the menu is stacked.

Menu Highlights

The specials alone were tempting:

  • Month-long Corned Beef and Cabbage special

  • A smashburger served in a skillet of melty cheese

  • A slice of Oreo Cheesecake

The regular menu also offers a huge variety of pub favorites and Irish-inspired comfort food. Choosing just one dish felt nearly impossible.

But before we even got to the food…

Happy Hour Surprise: A Mocktail Menu

We arrived just in time for happy hour, and to my absolute delight…

They have a mocktail menu!!!!

Yes, you heard that right. Cue the angels. Or maybe someone playing a Guinness harp somewhere in the distance.

There are currently two mocktail options:

  • Affogato

  • Citrus Sipper

The affogato (espresso poured over ice cream) sounded incredible, but since I’m trying to keep my caffeine intake under control, I went with the Citrus Sipper.

The Mocktail: Citrus Sipper

The Citrus Sipper is served in a tall glass filled with orange mango lemonade topped with club soda.

It’s bright, refreshing, and packed with flavor. The orange and mango blend together for a vibrant, silky citrus taste that feels almost like summer in a glass.

Honestly? A fantastic mocktail option.

Happy Hour Food

Since it was happy hour, we grabbed a couple of appetizer specials.

Basket of Waffle Fries — $5

These came out piping hot and perfectly crispy. They were thick, golden waffle fries that honestly rival some of the best fast-food versions out there (yes, even the beloved ones). Add a side of cheese and it practically becomes a meal.

Soft Pretzels — $8

Three shiny buttery pretzel sticks arrived with a side of cheese sauce. They were soft, buttery, and pillowy, with that fresh-baked warmth you want in a pretzel.

They might not beat a classic Amish pretzel, but they’re still a solid appetizer.

The Entrées

After what felt like forever debating the menu, we landed on two main dishes.

Spicy Thai Grilled Shrimp Wrap

This wrap was packed with grilled shrimp tossed in Thai mayo, along with spring mix, carrots, and cucumber.

The shrimp were flavorful and the greens were fresh and light. The grilled wrap itself had actual grill marks, which helped it stay perfectly intact with no cracking or dripping everywhere.

It came with seasoned fries and crisp pickle slices, which completed the plate perfectly.

Prime Rib Sandwich

This sandwich is an absolute monster.

Served on a large slab of focaccia (the online menu says ciabatta, but this was definitely focaccia), it features a generous portion of perfectly cooked prime rib, onions, and melted Swiss cheese, along with a side of au jus for dipping.

It’s big, juicy, and seriously satisfying.

The Atmosphere

Before leaving, we took a moment to look around.

Even with the renovations, the place still carries that classic neighborhood bar feeling. It reminded me of going out to eat with my parents as a kid, greasy comfort food, sports on the TVs, and a lively crowd.

But now everything feels upgraded:

  • The food is elevated

  • The atmosphere is warmer

  • And thankfully… the weird “old building smell” is gone.

A New Local Favorite

Later that day, we drove by again and the parking lot was still completely full. From afternoon through late night, this place stays busy.

That’s always a good sign.

We even recommended Dooney’s to friends later when we went to see the new Pixar movie Hoppers. Everyone was looking for somewhere to hang out before and after the show, and this felt like the obvious answer.

Northfield finally has its neighborhood pub back.

And honestly?

It’s better than ever.
