A Legend, A Banana Cream Pie, and A Mocktail Walk Into My Weekend…

Another week, another fabulous mocktail adventure, but this time, the story begins long before the mocktail ever touches my lips. Buckle up, my friends, because today we dine at the legendary Chef Vola’s… and my inner foodie is still screaming.

The Holy Grail of Reservations

You know those restaurants you hear about for years, the ones whispered about by locals like they’re part of some culinary secret society? That’s Chef Vola’s. I’ve been dreaming of eating here for over a decade. TEN. YEARS.

Enter: Tom. Childhood friend. Hero. Reservation wizard.
Shout out to you, Tom—you magnificent angel.

Suddenly… we were IN. Pinch me. Harder. No, harder. Yup, still real.

A Century of Flavor & Mystery

Chef Vola’s has been feeding Atlantic City since the 1920s. We’re talking Sinatra’s favorite banana cream pie, Beyoncé sightings, Gordon Ramsay approval, and even a feature on Boardwalk Empire

For decades, this place was the foodie equivalent of Fight Club.
No phone number. No email. No website. Only the if you know, you know reservation.

Then COVID came and the digital doors cracked open and things changed a bit. I watched from afar, never pressing “call,” always whispering, “One day…”

Well folks…. Today was that day. The banana cream pie destiny had arrived.

Inside the Icon

Walking in felt like stepping into someone’s home, which makes sense, because it was a rooming house that was transformed into a restaurant (and probably speakeasy) by brothers Joe and Pina Vola. Tight tables, zero personal space, and within minutes we were best friends with the strangers beside us. If you don’t like being lovingly elbow-to-elbow with your new extended family, this place is not for you.

Chef Vola’s is BYOB, no bar, so a true mocktail isn’t an option. BUT Steve the server made ginger ale and espresso look like Michelin-star beverages in fancy glasses. Sold.

My grandmother had eaten here back in the day and raved about it, so expectations were soaring. Astronomical. Terrifyingly high.

Let me tell you, they delivered. Oh yeah, totally worth all the hype.

We Ordered… Everything. Literally.

Because how does one choose? You don’t. You panic-order six things and pray. Side note: everything is a la carte.

  • 🌱 Spinach with garlic and oil

  • 🍝 Angel hair pasta with famous blush sauce

  • 🍝 Angel hair with bolognese (Joe inhaled it silently—always a good sign)

  • 🍲 Italian chicken pastina soup with crab meat (I still can’t pronounce the actual name of this dish, so bare with me)

  • 🐟 Salmon topped with pure Maryland crab (LIFE-CHANGING)

  • 🍖 Veal parmigiana on the bone (Joe’s new top favorite meal)

We handed in our menus and I suddenly had a crisis:

What if… I can’t fit dessert?

Absolutely not. Unacceptable. I called Steve back over.

“Hi, I’m going to be that guy… Is it okay if I get dessert first?”

Steve laughed, said “Of course,” and immediately became my favorite person alive.

BANANA. CREAM. PIE!!!!!

This pie deserves its own section. Its own book. Its own national holiday.

A giant, towering chilled slice loaded with whipped cream, crushed Oreos, and chocolate drizzle. One bite, ONE SINGLE BITE, and I knew why Sinatra himself worshiped this dessert.

Silky bananay goodness. Fresh banana chunks. Crunchy Oreo crust. I ascended. I transcended. If they had a full pie available, I would have handcuffed it to my wrist and walked out.

The Other Dishes (aka: Flavor Fireworks)

  • Pastina soup — Italian chicken + crab = a warm hug from Nonna and Poseidon at the same time. The server explained to me 3 times everything that was in it and what it was actually called, but I just said yes that sounds good! It was a true Italian chicken pastina soup that was also filled with crab meat. No idea what I ate, but I’d eat it again. Please excuse the ugly photo, this was a couple bites in…

  • Angel hair pasta, one with blush and one bolognese — the blush sauce was ricotta-packed, creamy, dreamy perfection. The bolognese must’ve been good, because Joe chose to lock in instead of chit chat. The pasta was so very thin. I’m going to keep saying it, everything was perfect.

  • Salmon with crab topping — the crab toppig was ALL crab, no filler. A revelation. A massive salmon, cooked to flaky perfection, topped with a crispy slightly crunchy crab topping (think almost a crab cake). The salmon was the size of the plate and the crab covered the whole top. First bite, holy moly. I don’t know how I’ve come this far in life without this. If I could eat this every day, I probably would.

  • Veal parm on the bone — the guy next to us convinced Joe to order it; Joe is now considering naming his firstborn after it. Again, very little words due to many many bites. Probably one of the best dinners of his life!

  • Spinach side — “side” is a bold word. It fed a family of four. If you want to have some veggies with your meal there are a few to choose from. We landed on the spinach in garlic and oil. The garlic cloves that sat on top were crispy and the perfect addition to the melt-in-your-mouth spinach.

Round Two: Dessert Returns

Because after banana cream pie… why stop? Chef Vola’s offers a mix of difference dessert options including 26 different cakes and pies. I am on a mission. I need to try them all. But maybe not all in one night. So we picked some top sellers:

  • 🍋 Limoncello Pie — bright, chilled, lemon-scented magic. The sweet and tart flavors perform a waltz on your tongue.

  • 🧀 Toasted Butterscotch Ricotta Cheesecake — may god have mercy on my soul. The cheesecake is served warm with mountains of whipped cream. The warm cheesecake and the sticky steamy sweet butterscotch makes this dessert positively sinful!

  • 🥥 Coconut Pecan Walnut Ricotta Cheesecake — Another warm cheesecake complemented with whipped cream and topped with a crunch toasty coconut and nut mixture that reminds you of the much anticipated girl scout cookie season. But all grown up and dangerous.

Every bite: spectacular.
Every calorie: worth it.
Every judgmental stare from nearby tables: deserved.

When the check came in a cherry-red wood box filled with mints, Joe dumped the entire mint stash straight into the to-go bag. No hesitation. Zero shame.

Chef Vola’s Score: 1,000,000/10.
I would live there if zoning laws allowed it.

Part II: The Mocktail I Deserved

The next night, I needed a girls’ night and a real mocktail. We headed to Borgata to see Ron White aka the soundtrack of my childhood living room. All thanks to my father having the Blue Collar Comedy Tour on the TV for a good laugh. I may have watched that special over 100 times, and it made me laugh every single time. Before he even took stage a big glass of liquor was waiting for his arrival on the stool on stage. He looks much older than the person I remember on the 2003 DVD. Sometimes, I hate time. He came strutting out, and told a bunch of stories about his love life, childhood, and “assholiness.” With all these comics and specials flooding Netflix, it was nice to see a legend in action. Also, a round of applause for Ron White being sober! He still has his liquor on stage, but drinks nonalcoholic beverages in his glass. I bet he loves a good mocktail too!

After the show, I was in desperate need of some mocktail magic! Thank goodness, there is B Bar. For years, B Bar has been serving up mocktails and cocktails. Though they didn’t have a Herotini this time of the year, there was a non-alcoholic drink menu! Hell yea!

I ordered the TLC made with agave, mint, and lime. Except, tonight they were out of mint.
Still delicious: a lemonade sweet base with some bubbly action. Super sweet but not over the top. The mint would have been a nice refreshing addition. Maybe next time!

Live music rolled in, the crowd grew, sports were blasting on every screen, and the energy was perfect. I considered gambling my rent money, but instead decided to be responsible and go home.

B Bar Score: 8/10.

A Weekend for the Books

A bucket-list restaurant + a nostalgia-filled comedy show + a mocktail nightcap = perfection.

Until next time,
The Sober Party Girl
