Girl Dinner, Mocktails, and Books: My First Visit to Villa Rifici in Absecon, NJ
Sometimes the best meals aren't fancy. They're the ones filled with good friends, crispy fries, a sweet mocktail, and plenty of laughter.
Thankfully, my cousin completely understands the assignment.
When she invited me to Girl Dinner Night at Villa Rifici in Absecon, New Jersey, complete with Austen's Shelf Mobile Bookstore, my response was immediate:
Uhm... SAY. LESS.
I had never been to Villa Rifici before, but I've heard locals rave about the food and cozy atmosphere. Every time I've driven past, it looked like one of those hidden neighborhood restaurants that only the locals know about.
Well...
You can officially cross "hidden gem" off the list.
Girl Dinner Was a Whole Event
When I pulled into the parking lot, I was greeted by absolute chaos, in the best way possible.
Cars filled every parking space and spilled onto the side streets. I finally found a spot closer to Dairy Queen and made the short walk over.
Before heading inside, I stopped to admire Austen's Shelf Mobile Bookstore. Imagine a tiny trailer transformed into the cutest little traveling bookstore. Shelves lined with books, cozy decorations, and readers already waiting in line; it was absolutely adorable.
The line wasn't too bad...
...but my stomach had one priority.
Girl Dinner.
Thank Goodness My Cousin Got There Early
Luckily, my cousin had already claimed a table because within minutes the restaurant was completely packed. The waiting line stretched across the dining room.
Every table was full. The bar was full. The staff was absolutely hustling.
I think I only spotted a couple of servers trying to take care of what felt like the entire restaurant.
To everyone working that night… We saw you.
And you deserved every tip you received.
The Girl Dinner Menu Was Genius
The special event menu couldn't have been more perfect.
For $25, you picked:
A House or Caesar Salad
An entrΓ©e:
Fries
Personal Pizza
Mozzarella Sticks
Margherita Flatbread
A specialty mocktail or cocktail
I swear I heard angels singing. Whoever came up with this menu deserves a raise because this is exactly what Girl Dinner should be.
The Mocktail Review πΉ
Of course I ordered the Blue Between the Lines Virgin Blueberry Mojito.
As a South Jersey mocktail hunter, I was excited to try something new.
It wasn't bad...
...but it didn't quite wow me.
It was light, bubbly, minty, and refreshing, but the blueberry flavor was barely there. One lonely muddled blueberry was doing a lot of heavy lifting. Under normal circumstances, I probably would have hoped for a little more flavor.
But considering the bartender was trying to keep up with a restaurant full of hungry book lovers, I completely understood. Sometimes surviving the rush is the real victory.
The Food Review
After a bit of a wait (which honestly was expected), our server returned looking completely exhausted. He accidentally brought two Caesar salads and two flatbreads before realizing our order was missing some items.
He apologized, explained that the kitchen was slammed, and promised he'd make it right.
Honestly? We just wanted to give him a hug.
A little while later another Caesar salad and the fries arrived. The order still wasn't exactly right, but everything looked so good that nobody was interested in complaining.
The Food:
The Margherita Flatbread: This was absolutely delicious.
The crust was thin, crispy, and perfectly crunchy. Fresh mozzarella melted over the top with shreds of basil made every bite taste fresh and light.
I could easily eat one of these every week.
The Fries: Listen… I'm a certified French fry enthusiast. I know good fries. These are THE GOOD FRIES.
Golden. Crispy. Perfectly salted. No notes.
The Caesar salad: I had ordered a house salad, but that’s okay. The caesar looked good anyway!
Sometimes a side salad is just a side salad. This one surprised me. The lettuce was fresh, crisp, and well dressed. Not sad, wilted, or forgotten in the refrigerator for three days like some restaurants try to pass off. This was e xactly what it needed to be.
Girl Dinner Was a Success
By the end of dinner, our plates were practically spotless. Naturally, we were already planning our next visit. The strategy? Everyone orders something different. Then we share everything.
Flatbread. Fries. Mozzarella sticks. Maybe even pizza.
Honestly, Girl Dinner might become our new summer tradition. A summer “friendsgiving” if you will.
Restaurants...Take notes.
The Bookstore Crowd Was Serious
After dinner we walked back over to Austen's Shelf Mobile Bookstore. The line had easily doubled while we were eating.
My cousin and her friend were committed enough to wait. Me?
I respectfully bowed out.
The bookstore looked absolutely charming, but there are very few books I love enough to stand in line for fifteen minutes on a summer evening.
I'll happily admire it from afar.
Final Thoughts
Events like this remind me why I love exploring local restaurants around South Jersey.
Good food. Creative mocktails. Small businesses working together. Book lovers. Friends catching up over crispy fries.
It's such a simple idea, but it created one of the most fun evenings I've had in a while.
Villa Rifici clearly wasn't expecting quite this large of a turnout, but honestly, that's a great problem to have. I have no doubt they'll be even more prepared next time, and judging by the crowd, there will definitely be a next time.
If you're looking for a cozy restaurant in Absecon, NJ, keep Villa Rifici on your list. And if they host another Girl Dinner event...
Get there early.
Trust me.
Until Next Time,
The Sober Party Girl π
