Charlie’s Bar Somers Point: Wings, Herotinis & Shore Traditions

Image
Rainy weekends at the Jersey Shore call for comfort food and good vibes. So we made our way to Charlie’s Bar , the Somers Point legend that’s been serving wings, drinks, and Shore traditions for nearly 80 years. This cash-only spot was packed when we walked in, but the hostess had us seated in minutes. Off to a good start! And right by the counter, I spotted them, the Herotini cards from the Hero Campaign. A mocktail and a way to vote for your favorite? Hell yea for Herotini season! A Family Tradition Since 1944 Charlie’s isn’t just another bar, it has been a Somers Point landmark since 1944, proudly owned and operated by the Thomas Family for four generations. Originally located across the street on New Jersey Avenue, the bar moved into its current building in 1953—a structure dating back to 1896 with a colorful past. Over the years, it’s been everything from a post office and ice cream parlor to a general store and market. In its early days, Charlie’s ran a small taproom in the fron...

Birthday Weekend Bonanza!

Image
I never make a big fuss about my birthday. Still, since it happens to fall on a major holiday, I always feel a bit of joy knowing that, even if people aren't celebrating me , they're out partying just the same. But this post isn't really about me. The real star of the weekend? My wonderful, handsome husband, Joe, who celebrates his birthday on August 13th. If I had all the money in the world, I’d throw him the most unforgettable birthday bash, because he deserves the world and then some. While we couldn’t go all out with a huge party or fancy dinner, we made sure to celebrate him all weekend long. And it was perfect. First Stop: Wildwood, NJ — Arcade Adventures We kicked things off with a trip to Wildwood for some fun at Mariner’s Arcade , hands down one of the best arcades around when it comes to prizes and ticket payouts. I won’t say how many tickets we’re hoarding, but let’s just say... we’re this close to cashing in on an autographed Eagles helmet!  Birthday magic was ...

Winding Down at The Windjammer: Brunch, Mocktails & Jersey Vibes

Image
New Jersey has been called the “Diner Capital of the World.” Honestly, I can’t imagine life without a hometown spot where you can order chicken parm and pancakes at 2 a.m. In South Jersey, we’re lucky—there’s no shortage of great diners and delis. This time, we took a drive to a diner-meets-bar serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The smell of fresh coffee hit me before I even opened The Windjammer’s door in Somers Point, New Jersey. A Family Story in Every Bite Every great diner has a story. The Windjammer’s began with Steve Tiniakos, who came to the U.S. from Athens in 1972 and started as a dishwasher. Over decades, he worked his way through the restaurant ranks—running family-owned diners, co-owning the Shore Diner, and finally, in 2023, opening The Windjammer with his wife Virginia and sons Stratis and Jimmy. They took over a former T.G.I. Friday’s, completely renovated it, and created a space that blends fresh energy with that classic diner warmth. Their recipe for success? Att...

Sweet Celebrations and Flavorful Bites at Rocco’s Townhouse in Hammonton

Image
Hammonton, New Jersey —affectionately known as the Blueberry Capital of the World—is one of my favorite foodie day-trip destinations. With its blend of Italian markets, cozy eateries, and small-town charm, every visit is a treat. Our usual routine includes a visit to Bagliani’s Market for freshly baked bread, cheeses, pasta, and maybe a few of Little Gina’s Pitzells or Jen’s cookies to stash away for later. Then, it’s a stroll down Bellevue Avenue, popping into antique shops or grabbing a seasonal cannoli from Mannino’s , and a savory waffle sandwich from Funky Cow Café , all while my husband digs into his second elote from Fruitamex . But this visit was extra special: it was my mother-in-law’s birthday, and we had the perfect place to celebrate— Rocco’s Townhouse . About Rocco’s Town House A Local Favorite with a Storied Past Rocco’s Townhouse isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a Hammonton institution. Originally opened in 1949 as “The Town House,” it was designed to be a true neighborho...
